Will J, aka Detroit J, aka the K Town Ranga

Will is by far my favourite  photographer/ranga. He gets more dope photo’s then some professional photographers I know and the dude is still in f**’n high school?!? Is everyone else just a lazy scunt, or is Will some kind of photo bot? I’m not sure, but you should check his photo blog out here. He’s been shooting in Detroit quite a bit this summer so you know he’s got the goods.

Will’s been published in Color Magazine, and Concrete Powder this year (which I guess is now just Concrete now…Being in Australia apparently has me a bit out of the Canuck loop..

Sometimes you see a piece of graffiti so bad, that it’s good. This is not one of those ones. This is a penis. It’s apparently drawn with a crusty blue piece of chalk.

Now, I’m not the type of person to try and grind or slide a 15 stair wooden handrail. If I had enough cajones to try that sort of thing, the last thing I would want to see is blue cockenballs. Is it there to remind skaters not to land on big sid and the twins on that specific spot? Is it a fertility kind of thing like the statues at the entrance of the hilltribe villages of Northern Thailand? Who knows…

This was my first time at this backyard mini, and it also happened to be Lee Ralph’s birthday party. Unfortunately he wasn’t skateboarding, but luckily Monkey, Zac, and Little Matt were there to entertain the beer guzzling crew

In 2002 I met this guy at the Lagoa bowl in Rio de Janeiro who looked exactly like Jeron Wilson. Not very ironically, it turned out that his nickname is, well, Jeron Wilson. He’s an amazing skater, and I ran into him recently at a very random place, the Rocinha Skatepark in 2007. I say it’s a random place to meet for 2 reasons..

1) Rocinha is the largest favela in South America, and  people go either because they live there, or their buying cocaine or guns

2) The skatepark sucks ass. No one really would ever make an effort to visit the place just to go skate. If you attempt to drop in on the 4 foot “quarter pipe” (with 2 feet of vert…) you’ll probably end up elbowing 20+ favela kids in the face.

To set the record straight, I wasn’t buying drugs or guns, I was filming some stuff for a school in the favela. Jeron was just passing through on the way to his neighbourhood and randomly decided to check the park at the same time I happened to be there.

This promo is my favourite project that I’ve worked on so far. In 2007 spent 2 months in Rio de Janeiro working/eating rice and beans with the design gurus at Cartel Design. This Avuatauba Skateboards promo turned out exactly how I imagined it. It got played in Brasil  on ESPN, got premiered at a crazy launch party in Lapa, and it’s featured on many websites including Transworld Skateboarding.

I’ve got so many outtakes kicking it on a harddrive somewhere including clips of the following: Solvent sniffing mendigos, angry corrupt military police, the elusive “Praca XV” dancer, and a ton of skatboard shit of course. Unfortunately, I’m in Australia and the tape is heavily guarded at a compound somewhere in Canada. By that I mean it’s in a shoe box at my Mom’s house, so it’s going to take me a minute to get those clips up…..Until then, here’s the first  Avuatauba Skateboards promo! #4 is in production right now, so I’ll link that ish as soon as it’s out.
